You’re ready to try Pilates. You’ve looked at the schedule. And now you’re wondering: mat or reformer?
At Pilates by Ashtyn, you can start with either. You don’t need to master the mat before taking a Reformer class, and choosing Mat doesn’t mean choosing an easier workout.
Both teach control, precision, breath, and intentional movement. The difference is how you get there.
What’s the difference between Mat and Reformer Pilates?
Mat Pilates primarily uses your body weight, sometimes alongside bands, balls, rings, or weights. Without a moving carriage or springs, you create stability and control through your own body.
Reformer Pilates uses a spring-loaded machine with a moving carriage, straps, and adjustable resistance. Depending on the exercise and setup, that resistance can support your movement, challenge it, or do both.
Start with Mat if you want fewer moving parts
If learning a machine feels like one more thing to think about, Mat can be a comfortable place to begin.
You’ll focus on how you move, how you breathe, and how to create control without navigating equipment. Simple setup. Plenty to learn.
Our signature Mat Pilates class is the foundational starting point. Other formats add different challenges, so check the class description before booking.
You can explore our Mat Pilates classes to find the format that fits your experience.
Start with Reformer if you’re excited about the equipment
You do not need to understand spring settings before arriving. Your instructor will introduce the machine and guide you through setup and movement.
Our signature Reformer Pilates class welcomes beginners. Intro to Reformer is specifically designed for clients with zero to three Reformer classes who want more time learning the equipment and foundations.
Do you have to choose just one?
Absolutely not.
Mat and Reformer offer different ways to practice the same foundations. You may enjoy the focus of Mat one day and the spring resistance of Reformer another.
PBA offers both at our Italian Village and Westerville studios.
